Western Digital serves up 750GB notebook drive for $139

WD’s latest Scorpio Blue boosts the ceiling for budget-friendly 2.5 inch notebook hard drives to a whopping 750GB.

It’s hard to find an excuse not to supersize your laptop’s storage when a measly $140 can drop a 750GB drive in your hands.

That’s what you can get from this week (although if you’re in New Zealand it’ll cost you NZ$179) with the local release of WD’s premium Scorpio Blue mobile drive.

The 2.5 inch hard drive is a double-platter disc which packs 375GB per platter. If you’re after speed as much as space it’s worth noting that these fatter platters spin at 5400 rpm rather than 7200 rpm, although the 3Gbps SATA interface should keep things rocketing along if your notebook supports that high-speed pipeline.

And while the drive may be big, WD reckons it runs cool and quiet (well, they would say that of course – when’s the last time a manufacturer came out and said “Hey, our drives are as loud as a lawmower and will sear your thigh like a tuna steak”?).

Like its less-endowed siblings, the Scorpio Blue 750GB is covered by a three year warranty.

Hmm, tricky decision now. Do I put the 9.5mm 750GB drive in my new MacBook Pro, or try the 12.5mm 1TB one? Both will fit, but I'm thinking there -must- be a reason Apple doesn't put 1TB ones in its own machines...

Same reason as everywhere else ... $$$.

In a marketplace where the GB holds more street cred than the 5400rpm, I'd say it wont be too long before we see these drives as OEM in more than a few machines. Was their any mention of the current consumption? 5400, plus low heat and noise would usually equate to a current sipper.
