Tech analyst firm Gartner predicts no mistletoe delight for Microsoft this Christmas, but forecasts a rapid take-up of Windows 7 next year.
Despite a slight uptick in PC sales during the past few months, the analysts at Gartner expect next week’s launch of Windows 7 “should have minimal impact on PC unit growth”.
Indeed, any bump in the number of PC shipped through to year’s end could be artificial gains due to “inventory adjustments around the launch” says Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.
While global PC shipments were up by a mere 0.5 percent (to 80.9 million units) between July and September of this year, compared to the same period in 2008, Gartner had expected to see that number slump by 5.6 per cent (which makes you wonder how and why they got it wrong in the first place).
The company also makes what some may consider an obvious prediction that “Windows 7 will become the dominant OS on new PCs” in 2010, with two-thirds of all new PCs by year’s end coming preloaded with Windows 7.
But the shiny new OS won’t overtake Vista until 2012, which it’s tipped to be running on 53 percent of installed PCs.
