Windows 7 Release Candidate, get it here

The public release of the final Windows 7 test version is here for the world to try, will you be tempted?

After a few server ups and downs, on May 5, US Pacific Time, Microsoft finally threw the switch for Windows 7 RC. While there is a bit of a wait for the Product Key page to pop up, things do seem to be running reasonably quickly. As with everything Microsoft, there is a new catch. Recent posts have indicated you can play with it for a year, but while it doesn't expire until June 1, 2010, it will start shutting down every few hours from March 1, to give you a gentle nudge to go and buy a copy.

You can pick the 2.5GB file up here. This time, there is no limit to the number of downloads, or registration keys, available. So, no rush. Aside from the time limit, there is little reason to not give the OS a go, if you have a spare PC. Even the driver issues mentioned in our recent article, have been fixed.

Enjoy the smell of freshly baked operating systems

Whereas with previous versions you could choose which edition of the OS to install, this time you get Ultimate and nothing else. This will allow you to try out features like XP Mode, even if you don't fancy buying a business version when the RC starts to expire.

Also out is Windows Server 2008, and Microsoft is encouraging testers to try them together, if you work in a suitable environment to experience them running in tandem; "Windows Server 2008 R2 has many features that are designed to specifically work with client computers running Windows 7, including simplifying remote connectivity for corporate computers by using the DirectAccess feature, Secured remote connectivity for private and public computers by using a combination of the Remote Workspace, Presentation Virtualization, and Remote Desktop Services Gateway features, and Improved performance for branch offices by using the BranchCache feature."

Interesting as it gives you a new Serial number on download when the original one I got with the 1st download works without a problem.

Not impressed. Spent two and a half hours trying to install Win7RC without luck. Freezing, BSODs, etc. Back to XP.

I had it installed and running within 30 minutes last night. It installed all the required drivers by itself, no worries. I'll install the rest of my usual software onto it tonight then have a play round with it.

Serial number my ass! They're just trying to make you feel special, like you've got something valuable. For the beta they had about 5 keys total for their thousands of testers. They just rotate them around.

Is anyone else having problems downloading this file?
I keep getting the error:
"The instruction at "0x0a280068" referenced memory at "0x0a280068". The memory could not be written"
I am running Win XP Pro SP3 and using IE8. I have all the latest updates.
I get the error on the screen where it is meant to download the file - making comments about using Java/active X control.
Pressing OK or cancel to terminate/debug the problem just causes the window to close on me.

Hello, did you let the browser to install the active-X applet to install the akamai download manager?
I did have no problems downloading the ISO file, I got the 32 and 64 bit versions, i burned the 64 bit version with my favourite program Nero Burning ROM you can try it with another program you use, just make sure it supports ISO images for burning.

The error appeared before it could download the Active X control. But the point is moot for me now, as I used me laptop, with Vsta and IE7 to downlaod the file, and then I installed it on the same. I was amazed at the fact this laptop now boots up quicker :-)
